Curriculum Vita:
Mathijs was born 1941, grew up in the Netherlands and lives in Germany where he worked as an airline pilot for Lufthansa.
He started ballooning in 1976. From the start he became 'addicted' to competition ballooning. He used to fly with his family as crew. Together they have competed on all continents.

Balloon sporting achievements:
Since 1978 he has competed in all Dutch National championships, ranking in the top three 22 times. He is three times Dutch Champion. He flew in all but two, World- and European Championships and WAGs since 1979. Two times he finished as Vice European Champion and two times in third position. He was the first pilot to achieve a Gold Badge in Holland.

Other ballooning activities:
He is an official in the sport of ballooning and has directed many national championships around the world. He was Vice President of the FAI/CIA for several years. His compassion is the sporting rules of ballooning, that's why he is sometimes nicknamed "Mr. Rules". He is a long-standing member of the Rules Subcommittee and its Working Groups. In the year 2000 he instituted the Competitor's Subcommittee (CSC) that is since then an active group in the FAI/CIA representing competitor's interest. He is the Webmaster of the CSC's website.
